Kawasaki Technical Feature - Brake fluid

Just like with your road bike it’s imperative to service a WorldSBK machine at regular intervals

In this video the Kawasaki team explain the process for changing the brake fluid on the Ninja ZX10R. For Mattia Fontana, mechanic for Tom Sykes, the process takes ten minutes and is generally undertaken after every race.

To change the brake fluid first you will remove existing fluid in the system. The brake fluid reservoir tank is opened and the fluid removed by opening the brake caliper connector. The existing fluid is them removed from the tank by pumping the brake lever and forcing the fluid out of the system.

Once the removal of fluid has begun the mechanic will start topping up the tank with fresh brake fluid. This process is completed simultaneously with the removal of fluid to avoid the potential for air to remain in the system. If this were to happen the brakes would not operate correctly and the system would fail.

This same process is also followed with the rear brake. For a rider such as Tom Sykes, who uses a thumb operated rear brake, we will see mechanics operate the handlebar mounted rear brake. For a rider such as Jonathan Rea who ustilises a regular brake mechanics will pump the foot mounted brake lever.

Once the brake lines have been filled with new brake fluid the task is completed and the quick connector of the caliper will be closed and then the brake fluid resevour tank will also be sealed. Once the tank has been closed the soft protector is fitted as a safety precaution.
