Revisit Michael van der Mark’s stunning Donington Park performance from 2018 as the Dutchman claimed his first WorldSBK wins

The 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship is making a full race weekend available for FREE to watch for the next week and this week’s offering is from Donington Park in 2018. There was drama and excitement throughout as well as titanic battles across all classes that were racing!

There was a shock winner in Race 1 as Michael van der Mark (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team) made history. Van der Mark became the first Dutch rider to win in WorldSBK as he took the win. The Dutchman fought his way through the pack after starting sixth as he claimed a stunning first WorldSBK victory.

He passed reigning Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), and then-Yamaha teammate Alex Lowes (now Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) in a win that had seemed unlikely prior to the weekend. The Kawasakis of Rea and Tom Sykes (now BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had looked like dominating the weekend but a stunning performance from van der Mark ensured he took a history-making victory.

The Dutchman made it two from two with a sensational victory in Race 2 as he beat Toprak Razgatlioglu (now PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team) and Rea. Both Rea and van der Mark had climbed through the field to battle for the win, having started eighth and ninth. Van der Mark kept close to Rea who had moved to front before making his moves to take his second win in as many days.

In the FIM Supersport World Championship, the Championship fight blew wide open when Sandro Cortese (now OUTDO Kawasaki TPR) took a hard-fought victory for Kallio Racing. Holding off French rider Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha), Cluzel and Cortese battled hard for the race victory; making contact at Coppice Corner on Lap 8. Randy Krummenacher (now MV Agusta Reparto Corse) led the Championship heading into the UK Round, but was unable to keep up with Cortese and Cluzel; the Championship getting tight at the top.

Ana Carrasco (now Kawasaki Provec WorldSSP300) claimed a stunning Grand Slam in the World Supersport 300 Championship with pole, fastest lap and the race victory. A superb start for the Spaniard kept her ahead at the start and the chasing pack were unable to match her pace; Carrasco extending her Championship lead with the dominant win.

While Carrasco was able to dominate, there was a titanic battle for second place. Scott Deroue (now MTM Racing Team) had looked like claiming second but late-race mistakes allowed Dorren Loureiro to take second place; his first podium in WorldSSP300. With a sensational podium battle on the last lap in a frantic race, this is a race not to be missed!

European Superstock 1000 also featured on the bill at Donington Park with Markus Reiterberger claiming a dominant lights-to-flag win. His nearest rivals – Maximilian Scheib (now ORELAC Racing VerdNatura) and Roberto Tamburini – were four seconds back as they engaged in a close, tense fight for second place after Chilean rider Scheib performed a defensive masterclass to hold on.
