New electronics was one major feature of focus for Vermeulen, plus tests to make final decisions on basic machine set-up before completion of two further tests in Spain in December.

Said Vermeulen, "I am not sure how many laps I did but I would guess at around 70 per day. We started at around 10.30, stopped for lunch, then we finished at around 16.30 because of the drop in track temperature when the sun went away."

He continued, "We just used standard Pirelli race tyres. They felt quite good. They were consistent and we were able to 20-30 laps on one set of tyres, if not in one go. I was quite happy with them really."

Vermeulen had conducted a short test at Autopolis in Japan recently, on a track which contrasted very strongly with Cartagena, allowing Vermeulen to work on another aspect of machine set-up.

"Cartagena has a lot of tight corners one after the other after the other," said Vermeulen. "Being able to control the bike and get it working in those conditions was a good step for us."

Sykes also made real progress after injuring his shoulder towards the end of the season, also setting a high number of laps over two days, despite some stiffness in his shoulder.
