Rea (Castrol Honda) goes quickest in FP1
As expected the four-cylinder machines were up at the front in the first free practice session at Monza. Quickest time went to Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) ahead of two BMWs, the Motorrad Motorsports version of Troy Corser and then Ayrton Badovini for Motorrad Italia SBK.

Fourth quickest was Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) followed closely by Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team). Current points leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) was ninth after going quickest in the early stages.

Chris Vermeulen (Kawasaki Racing Team), who grazed his left elbow in a crash in the session, and James Toseland (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team) were back on track after their recent injuries.
