Celebrating Pirovano
A look back at the life of 10-time WorldSBK Race winner and former Supersport Champion Fabrizio Pirovano
Fabrizio Pirovano recently sadly passed away, so WorldSBK.com has collected some of Pirovano’s best memories to celebrate the life of a veteran racer and multiple race winner, who was Supersport Champion in 1998.
Ten years before Pirovano took the Supersport crown, the Italian was there for the birth of WorldSBK, in 1988. Pirovano, from Biassono in Lombardia, finished the first year of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship as runner up with an impressive debut year for both man and Championship, scoring a win in the inaugural year of the series as well as racing in the CIV (Campionato Italiano Velocità). The following year saw Pirovano drop to fourth, but taking another victory, before 1990 proved another push for the title with five victories including a double win at home at the Autodromo Internazionale di Monza – a feat he would repeat in 1992.
1992 was also the first year Pirovano took the national crown, going on a run of Italian glory to take the CIV title three times in a row, alongside WorldSBK race wins and podiums. 1997 saw the Italian veteran move to Supersport, taking a win in his rookie year at home in Monza before an assault for the title in 1998 saw Pirovano take 5 wins on his way to being crowned Supersport Champion.
His last year of international competition was 2001, ending the year tenth in WorldSSP with a number of top five finishes.
