An Australian win in the first WorldSBK outing at Laguna – and some famous American faces on the grid

The first time WorldSBK was pitted against the fabulous Corkscrew corner at Laguna Seca was in 1995, with the grid lining up in California to put on the first show of what has now become many at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In that very first Race, it was the nation of Australia who dominated proceedings, with Anthony Gobert taking the win from the pole sitter Troy Corser.

There was plenty to cheer for for the home crowd, however: the man who came home eighth was on his way to becoming a double WorldSBK Champion and the legend of the Texas Tornado…and the rider who crossed the line in front of Colin Edwards was none other than American 2-wheel legend Freddie Spencer.

Check out how the spectacular 3.6km of Laguna Seca treated WorldSBK as the two met for the first time in today’s #ThrowbackThursday!
