Deroue aims for title after stunning return to top
The Dutch rider scores his first win since Assen 2017 and moves within 10 points from Carrasco
Scott Deroue (Motoport Kawasaki) secured his first FIM Supersport 300 World Championship win of the 2018 season at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve; an outstanding win that moves the Dutch rider up to second in championship standings with just one round remaining.
Deroue has hit form at just the right time, moving within just ten points of WorldSSP300 leader Ana Carrasco (DS Junior Team) after the Spaniard struggled around Portimao. This was Deroue’s first return to the rostrum since the Dutch Round this season, and also his first win since the 2017 Assen race.
Looking back at his stunning performance in Algarve, Deroue says: “We didn’t have a great start, but then in the first lap I got to overtake them because I had a really good slipstream. From that moment I was thinking: “Okay, now start pushing and pushing”. I trained this a lot in the practices, to do the lap times alone. I knew it would be very difficult to do. In the end, with three laps to go I opened a little gap, and I just kept pushing”.
Last year the Dutchman could only finish ninth at Magny-Cours – a result that would be insufficient to win the championship – but he fancies his chances at the final round shootout: “We’ve already tested in Magny-Cours and I felt really good, the bike is great there. I like the circuit and I think we can take the championship”.
