Laverty provides update following his Race 2 crash in Australia
The Irishman was injured in his final WorldSBK race after a crash at Turn 1 at Phillip Island
Eugene Laverty’s (Bonovo Action BMW) MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship came to a close on Sunday at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit but not in the way he wanted, after a Turn 1 crash in Race 2 during the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round left him with pelvic injuries. Laverty was transported to hospital in Melbourne following the crash and has since provided an update on his social media channels, as well as praising Xavi Fores (BARNI Spark Racing Team) who was involved in the crash with Laverty.
The crash occurred on Lap 18 of 22 at Phillip Island at Turn 1 with the pair on track next to each other as they fought over 13th place as Laverty looked to end his career in the points, before he transitions to being a co-owner of the Bonovo Action team as well as a rider coach. However, just as the leaders were coming around to complete Lap 18, the red flags were shown following the incident between Laverty and Fores. Laverty was conscious and transported to hospital in Melbourne for further assessment after being diagnosed with a pelvic injury.
Releasing a statement on his social media platforms, Laverty said: “Sorry for the lack of updates following my crash. I preferred to wait until I got the all clear from the internals med team this morning so after 43 hours, I’m plenty ready for a meal! I’ve been very fortunate that my pelvic and hip fractures are stable, so no surgery required. Hindsight’s 20/20 and while I could’ve cruised home those final five laps of my racing career, I figured there was no point being on track unless I was gonna give it 100%. The important thing is that I will recover well. Thanks for all the messages guys.”

In an additional Instagram post, Laverty responded to a post from Fores after the Spanish rider revealed he remained with Laverty following the crash. Laverty added: “Thank you so much for staying with me when I was suffering Xavi, you’re a true gentleman!”
