Friday, 18 October 2024 12:28 GMT

A new name claimed pole position while the top two in the Championship, Carrasco and Herrera, will join her on the front row

Sara Sanchez (511 Terra&Vita Racing Team) added her name to the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship history books by claiming pole position at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto during a red-flagged Tissot Superpole session. Sanchez was less than half-a-tenth ahead of Ana Carrasco (Evan Bros Racing Yamaha Team) in second while Maria Herrera (Klint Forward Factory Team) was almost four tenths back as the Race 1 grid for the Prometeon Spanish Round was set.

LATE FLURRY OF LAPS: Sanchez takes maiden pole

A load of late laps were the deciding moments in the 25-minute session, with Ana Carrasco (Evan Bros Racing Yamaha Team) setting a 1’51.892s before she was usurped by Estoril race winner Sara Sanchez (511 Terra&Vita Racing Team) after the #64 set a 1’51.671s to move two tenths clear of the Championship leader. Carrasco was able to close the gap to 0.047s on her penultimate lap. Maria Herrera (Klint Forward Factory Team) had been on course to move into P1, but she found traffic in the final sector, keeping her in P3 with Sanchez taking pole ahead of Carrasco for her maiden WorldWCR pole. With Sanchez’s P1 and Carrasco second, Herrera secured this year’s Tissot Superpole Award.

THE SECOND ROW: Ponziani leads Neila and Ruiz

Roberta Ponziani (Yamaha Motoxracing WCR Team) broke up the group of Spaniards as she claimed fourth place after the #96 set a 1’52.334s to head the second row for Race 1. She’ll be joined on that second row by Beatriz Neila (Ampito / Pata Prometeon Yamaha), who claimed fifth, while Pakita Ruiz (PS Racing Team 46+1) secured sixth after posting a 1’52.912s, lapping 1.2s away from Sanchez’s pole time.

HOWDEN AND DOBBS IMPRESS: back in the top ten, Dobbs crash

South Africa’s Jessica Howden (Team Trasimeno) took her best Superpole result since Portimao with P7, with Mallory Dobbs (Sekhmet Motorcycle Racing Team) in P8 despite a crash in the first 10 minutes of the session. The American came off her R7 machine at Turn 12 but her early lap times were enough to secure a second consecutive top-nine starting position. Wildcard Chloe Jones (GR Motorsport) put in an impressive 1’54.655s to claim P9 and a third row start, with Australia’s Tayla Relph (TAYCO Motorsport) completing the top ten.
