Bendsneyder faster than Oettl in red-flagged Phillip Island WorldSSP FP1, Masia impresses with P3 finish
Free Practice 1 from Australia’s testing Day 1 is in the books as the World Supersport season kick-off grows closer
Lights out for the 2025 FIM Supersport World Championship season is now days away and ahead of this weekend's action, the World Supersport grid have two final days of testing to square away their setups for the season debut. Bo Bendsneyder (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was the fastest on the day, the Rotterdam native laid down a 1’32.127s fastest lap, impressing ahead of his first full season with his MV Agusta Reparto Corse team.
Phillip Oettl (Feel Racing Reparto Corse) was the second fastest on the session, riding his Panigale V2 to a fastest lap of 1’32.827s and running the third most laps with 31 times around the track. Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) rounded out the would-be rostrum with the third-fastest time of the session, just two thousandths of a second separating him from fellow Ducati rider Phillip Oettl in front of him. Fourth-fastest, Valentin Debise, (Renzi Corse) was just as close behind Masia, only two-thousandths separated Debise from Masia in third place, and the French veteran rider looks to be starting his season out with the same pace he showed in 2024, having earned a similar fourth-place finish in the Riders’ Championship.
Marcel Schroetter (WRP Racing) finished fifth and the Ducati rider clocked a personal fastest lap of 1’33.180s. Behind him, finishing sixth, Filippo Farioli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was limited to only 19 laps as a result of a turn three technical problem in his 14th lap, and a red-flag inducing crash on his 19th lap with 15 minutes left in the session. In seventh place, the second French rider in the top 10- Lucas Mahias (GMT94-YAMAHA) was the top-performing Yamaha rider on the day, recording a 1’33.240s personal fastest lap on the session on the back of his team’s new Yamaha R9 bike. Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) was hot on the tail of his fellow Yamaha rider, finishing with a time of 1’33.275s, only three hundredths of a second slower than Mahias. In ninth place, Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) finished with a time of 1’33.296s. The #69 placed the fastest of the pair of Triumph Street Triple RS 765’s, just shy of three tenths of a second ahead of his teammate Oli Bayliss, who finished with a personal best time on the session of 1’33.605s over 31 laps.
