CAN IT GET ANY CLOSER? Will Redding be back to the front on a Ducati as he aims to ‘show my potential again’?

Thursday, 6 February 2025 09:28 GMT

British star Redding enjoyed his best results in WorldSBK on the Panigale V4 R between 2020 and 2021, and he’s returning to the Italian brand for 2025…

Scott Redding (MGM BONOVO Racing) is getting back on Ducati machinery for the 2025 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship as he looks to return to the top step of the rostrum. The #45 spent two seasons onboard the Panigale V4 R machine in 2020 and 2021 as he fought for titles and was consistently on the rostrum, before a move away to BMW for 2022, 2023 and 2024. Now, after three seasons on the M 1000 RR, Redding is back on a Ducati but what will he be able to achieve in 2025?

INITIAL DUCATI DAYS: 12 wins, 37 podiums, two title challenges

Redding moved to WorldSBK after claiming the 2019 British Superbike title and he was an instant hit in the World Championship. He claimed five wins and 14 podiums as he took the title fight to the final round against Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha), although came up just short against the then-Kawasaki rider. In 2021, with the emergence of Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), then at Yamaha, Redding slipped to third, but he still racked up wins and podiums: taking seven and 23 respectively in 2021 before a move to BMW for 2022.

MOVE TO BMW: a surprise transfer for the Brit

Redding’s switch to BMW surprised many given his success with Ducati, and it took a while for the #45 to adapt but he soon claimed his first rostrums in BMW colours. The first came on home soil at Donington Park as he claimed third in the Tissot Superpole Race, before finishing third in Race 1 at the Autodrom Most and second in Race 1 at Magny-Cours. Unfortunately for Redding, these would be his only podiums for the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team outfit before he made the switch to Bonovo Action BMW for 2024. A handful of fourth places were the highlight and with a restructuring in the team, Redding stayed as they moved to Ducati machinery as a one-rider team.

RETURN TO DUCATI: quick in winter testing…

Redding had to wait to get his hands on his new race bike, testing it for the first time at Jerez in January when the team unveiled a striking blue livery for their move to Ducati machinery. He was immediately quick again at the Spanish venue, finishing third on Day 1 on the only full dry day of testing across Jerez and Portimao; although the times on that day were still off the pace seen at the season-ending Spanish Round. He took fifth in the wet on Day 2, while he was further down the order on Day 1 at Portimao with the track in a sub-optimal condition due to earlier rainfall.

REDDING’S AMBITIOUS TARGET: “My goal is really to fight for the World Championship… I have to believe in myself”

When his Ducati numbers were put to him at Jerez and asked what fans could expect from him in 2025, Redding started with a joke: “We need 12 more at least!”, before going on to add: “I’m in a position with the team that I’ve got everything I want. The goal was to get the bike and the team around me to build my confidence and show my potential again. My goal is really to fight for the World Championship. I would be satisfied with top three because a lot of things are happening in a season. I know I have the speed. I’ve shown it before. Now I’ve got a bike and I feel like I’m a better rider now over the last three years than when I first arrived here. I have to believe in myself. The team believes in me. I have a bike that I wanted. If I cannot fight at the front again this year, then I’ll probably never have that chance. I have a goal and a vision. A lot of people had the same facial expression when I want to fight to win the Championship, but if you have the bike and the material that you believe you can do it with, that has to be the goal. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, not saying I’m going to win every race. I do want to be fighting to be a contender like I was when I first came to this Championship.”
